Brazilian soccer great Pele scores his 1,000th professional goal in a game, against Vasco da Gama in Rio de Janeiro's Maracana stadium on November 19, 1969. It was a major milestone in an illustrious career that included three World Cup championships. Pele, one of the greatest soccer players ever to take the field, was born Edson Arantes do Nascimento in Tres Coracoes, Brazil, in 1940. Markus Siegler, FIFA's director of communications said: "We had a first in the history of the World Cup yesterday when one player was booked three times in the same match, that is a little too much." However, since there was no protest from either side the 2-2 result stands. In the most recent case where a referee committed a technical error, last year's Asian World Cup qualifying playoff between Uzbekistan and Bahrain, the match was replayed.
